De Bijenkorf Amsterdam welcomes you in their Personal Shopping Lounge where experienced personal shoppers give you expert advice on a great look or an entirely new wardrobe.
Ever since luxury department store De Bijenkorf opened its doors in Amsterdam in 1870, it has been known for its varied collections of international and local brands, spectacular events and outstanding premium service. In recent years, the various departments have been modernized and they are now selling clothes from leading brands, ranging from COS and Tommy Hilfiger to Dries van Noten and Balenciaga.
The Personal Shopping Lounge is accessible to everyone and is a free-of-charge service
In Spring 2018, De Bijenkorf introduced an exclusive Personal Shopping Lounge on the second floor at the designer ladies department, and they’ve built on this success to open a second Personal Shopping Lounge – this time on the first floor at the men’s fashion department. Moreover, De Bijenkorf is now offering its customers personal styling advice online as well.
The Personal Shopping Lounge, measuring 52 m² (560 sq.ft) consists of two ample fitting rooms that can be connected. On entering the Lounge, one is immersed in a luxurious but serene atmosphere: the curtains of the fitting rooms are made of rich fabrics, the floor is covered with a soft carpet and the walls contain various marble elements.
The use of light in combination with the natural powdery tones and glass doors guarantee a quiet ambiance. There is a large, comfortable sofa and customers are welcomed with a cup of coffee, a glass of wine or champagne – it’s all part of the experience in the Personal Shopping Lounge. And last but not least, the Lounge offers a grand view of the National Monument on Dam Square!
The Personal Shopping Lounge is the domain of personal shoppers Marjo Kranenborg and Bastiaan van Schaik. They work by appointment and take their time to help customers: a personal shopping session usually takes around 2.5 hours.
“Before the session we get in touch with our customers to get more information, asking them for their sizes and the reason why they want to book an appointment. We regularly receive brides-to-be looking for a stylish alternative to the traditional white wedding dress, but the Personal Shopping Lounge is also popular among professionals needing a new wardrobe for their next career step. People’s personal preferences and requirements are never the same and that makes our job so much fun!” Marjo Kranenborg says.
‘We are proud to offer a highly personalized service with free delivery’
“The first thing I do, is asking what brands the customer likes as that says something about their style and budget. This will give me plenty of information to work with. We respect their preferences and won’t overwhelm them with items that do not fit the customer’s wallet and personality.”
The Personal Shopping Lounge is accessible to everyone and offers a free of charge service. Bastiaan and Marjo enjoy having a varied customer base, including locals, expats and hotel guests. They welcome men and women, as well as entire families.
Marjo: “The ample session time and the discrete environment of the Personal Shopping Lounge are important factors that help people make good fashion decisions. We let the customer try on various items to see what looks really good on them, suggesting some refreshing new colours or a surprising combination. Personally, I think that the clothes you buy should be easy to match with one another. A lot of people fall for a single clothing item in a store but don’t see the bigger picture. It is a nice aspect of our profession to be able to help them and make them feel good about themselves.”
Even though the Personal Shopping Lounge predominantly helps its customers with clothes, shoes and jewellery, they offer advice in other areas as well. “We also have very nice accessories for those who want to give their kitchen or bathroom a complete make-over. We are proud to offer a highly personalized service with free delivery, responding to our customers’ needs. It is nice to see we have built a strong relation with so many people, most of them coming here every season.”
