For those who won’t go to Italy this summer, no worries: Italy can also come your way. With the organic delicacies of La Vialla on your plate or in your glass, the Tuscan sun will start to shine in your own backyard or on your balcony.

We live in beautiful surroundings, with sociable towns and Amsterdam within our reach. However, at times you are in need of a little change. Longing for rolling hills, balmy summer evenings, and strolls through a vineyard followed by a lunch in the shade of a fig tree. Sitting at a long table covered by a chequered tablecloth piled up with delightful bites and delicious wines. That’s when you go to Italy, or Tuscany to be precise. This is how we ended up in La Vialla and it was love at first sight.

Fattoria La Vialla is a family farm owned by the Lo Franco family. A sustainable and biodynamic farm and winery. It is about an hour’s drive from Florence, in the enchanting Chianti-area. Tuscan specialties like wine, pecorino cheese, antipasti, sauces, pasta, honey, vinegar, cookies and other sweets are produced at La Vialla. There are over a hundred products, all of them are certified organic, in some cases vegetarian and vegan and, above all, molto delizioso, absolutely delicious!

Organic origin

“The origin of La Vialla is just as organic,” explains Ingrid Stoffer, a Dutch lady who moved to Italy for love in 2004. Among other things, she deals with PR at La Vialla. “In the early 70’s a lot of Tuscan farmers moved to the city, leaving behind their homes. During that time Piero and Giuliana Lo Franco came across a beautiful, but dilapidated house near Arezzo, fell in love and bought it.”

“Bit by bit it started to expand, a terrain with olive trees, a few dilapidated farms, some old vineyards, a flock of sheep without a shepherd and villa La Vialla. A vialla is a simple plough, which is part of our logo. They grew their own fruits and vegetables, because they wanted their children to eat healthy. Everything environmentally friendly and chemically untreated. Nowadays organic food is fairly common, but back then quite unheard of in Italy. It all just happened. Piero and Guiliana were way ahead of their time!”

Straight from the farm

Later Piero and Giuliana started to restore the olive groves and vineyards to their former glory and renovated the old farms, which are now being rented out to clients, mainly to the Germans, Dutch and English. The tourists visiting Tuscany were interested in their organic  wares from the start and that is how the sales began, straight from the farm. In the early 90s the first little car, stuffed to the brim with Christmas gifts, drove to friends in Germany and in 1996 ‘the Viallini’ converted to a biodynamic farm following the principals of Rudolf Steiner.

Ingrid: “Now, 40 years on, 1.400 hectares are being cultivated and we work with, approximately, 160 people. La Vialla farmstead, with a central square, the shop and the wooden-buring oven, is still the heart of the fattoria. During the summer there are many places to visit: the wine cellar, a barriques cellar with wine barrels made of oak, the olive oil mill, the grain mill, the bakery, the sauce kitchen, the cheesery, the dairy and the farm museum.”

“You can join in for a Tuscan lunch. There is a lot of laughter, good conversations and, of course, everything is about delicious food and wines! However, there is also a lot of hard work and pride involved. From working in the fields and preparing the products, to creating  up labels and the contact with our customers, we do it all ourselves. Our products are not available in the shops, everything goes directly to the consumer.”

Wine

Not only has La Vialla been awarded several significant environmental awards, also the wine, an important product of the fattoria, wins countless medals. Ingrid: “There are strict requirements when it comes to organic wine, one of which is a limitation on adding sulphite. The majority of our wines contain even less sulphite than is legally allowed. If you are talking about pride, you are talking about our wines. Everything comes together: tradition, patience, valuable raw materials, expertise, and lots and lots of love!”

“Of course, I also use the La Vialla products at home! When friends come over I love to fill the table with a variety of antipasti. That way everyone can enjoy the cipollina, red pesto, olives, artichokes, peperonata’s, and pecorino cheese with jams or honey. We usually pair it with a nice Chianti, or a fresh metodo classico spumante, and sometimes we conclude the meal with a traditional vin santo and cantucci cookies. Our two bambini of 1,5 and 3 drink grape juice diluted with water. All of our products suitable for kids are labelled with a child’s symbol. Whether something is vegetarian or vegan is indicated on each product and, recently, we added a gluten-free assortment.”

No middlemen

“As we grow, produce, pack and send everything ourselves, there is no need for middlemen. That way it is all done by us. We can guarantee high quality and low costs. Orders for € 100 and up are shipped free of charge, any orders under this amount we charge €8,60. You can make a selection of products you like or choose one of our magnificent gift packages to send to family and friends.”

It is always a treat to receive a La Vialla shipment at home. If only just because of the colourful booklet that comes with it. This booklet is full of pictures of la dolce vita, the sweet Italian life at La Vialla. The pictures are almost too good to be true. However, it ís true, we were there, remember! We were sitting under the fig tree, at a long table covered by a chequered tablecloth, filled with delightful bites and bottles of wine, and surrounded by wonderful people. La Vialla, ti amo, noi torneremo, we will be back!

Get rid of those fat-cells

At Finesse Bodyline Clinic in Woerden, they use Ultrashape: a devise which breaks down fat cells by means of ultrahigh soundwaves. Ultrashape is an effective way to lose your fat rolls, love handles, belly or men’s breasts. If you think ‘my beautician around the corner can do the same thing’ you are totally wrong.

It is a sore point to Finesse-owner Cor Kok, all those companies pretending to do a similar treatment as he and his team.  “Handling real UltraShape devises requires specialised, and medical training and only registered medical staff can do so. What we do cannot be compared with the work of a beautician, and that bugs me sometimes. In particular, when you see your own pictures on someone else’s website. But all well, we believe in our own skills. We use the UltiMed Contour Concept.”

Cor, a nurse by origin, even after twelve years, is still enthusiastic explaining what Finesse stands for. “The bottom line of the UltiMed concept remains the Ultrashape. The treatment can be compared to the disintegration of kidney stones, with the same outcome UltraShape disintegrates fat cells. It is done with ultrasonic soundwaves; the outer wall of the fat cell falls apart. The contents of the fat cell, the triglycerides, break free and will leave the body in an absolutely natural way. The body produces fat cells until about the age of eighteen, it stops there. So, what has been removed won’t come back. The treatment is safe and permanent. A painless alternative to liposuction.”

Persistent storage of fat

A remarkable amount, both men and women, visiting the clinic in Woerden look considerably slender at first sight. Cor: “We treat a lot of people who work-out on a regular basis and have a healthy food diet, nevertheless they do not lose fat rolls or other persistent storage of fat in the known problem areas. A healthy lifestyle in combination with our treatment gives the best results. Therefore our UltiMed-approach is based on those facts. It consists of three items: demolishing of fat cells, stimulating the drainage of waste by vacuum massaging, and working out on the cross-trainer. The matter of utmost importance: finding the cause of the problem and tackle it. If you don’t get on top of this, the body will keep on storing the fat in different areas.”

“While trying to find the cause, we are also looking at specific disorders and we check if medication or hormones are playing a role. We perform thorough blood research, if necessary a stool investigation, we check organ functions, we look at thyroid and adrenal glands, and we look at possible lack of minerals and vitamins.”

Catch 22

“The metabolism, all those biochemical processes and the interaction between the organs are crucial. You can have a health food diet, but if your intestines don’t work properly, you don’t take in the nutrients. We give advice about proper, healthy food. Diets are a regular Catch 22. You lose weight very quickly and for a very short while, you gain the weight again, and that is followed up by yet another diet. People hop on and off from crackers and smoothies to diet-shakes and low-carbohydrate food, and while doing so disrupt their entire metabolism. It’s a vicious circle.”

“If necessary we communicate our results with a GP, we have a good working relationship with them,” concludes Cor. “The goal of our total package is to get our clients’ health back on track and making sure, of course, to keep our clients’ slim bodyline. However, it’s more than just the curves. Furthermore, clients report back to us on a regular basis that, with our support, they now know what they can or cannot do. They now realize, a strict regime is not needed at all and they now, literally and figuratively, feel so much better.”

Root canal treatment. The mere words would send shivers along anyone’s spine – but not when Rik van Mill is your dentist. He is a guru in the field of endodontology. Expats love going to Dental Clinic H.J. van Mill’s whose employees not only speak Dutch and English but also Japanese, Hindi and Urdu.

As a trained civil engineer Rik van Mill made calculations for drilling platforms in the North Sea until one day he realized he didn’t want to spend the rest of his working life sitting behind a desk. Using his hands, that’s what he really wanted. So he started studying dentistry. “Right away, I felt like a fish in the water doing all this delicate manual work!”

Time and attention for patients

In 1982, Rik and his wife Wilma opened a dental practice at the Parmentierlaan in Amstelveen and they’re still based there. “We grew steadily and thought about moving, but this is just a very nice area,” Rik says. “Besides, we’d rather spend our money on high-tech equipment and new developments. Our priorities are delivering exceptionally high-quality service and taking time for our patients.”

‘Our priorities are delivering exceptionally high-quality and taking time for our patients’

“It starts with our receptionists trying their best to match appointments with the busy schedule of our patients. And when I’m training dentists I always tell them to forgot the protocol and take a moment to sit back and ask the patient what you can really do for him or her.”

Dr. Clifford Ruddle

When Rik starts talking about his profession, he bursts with enthusiasm. “In my early years as a dentist, it really annoyed me that the bridges and crowns we made were very good but that the roots would still fail after a while. Healthy roots are the foundation for healthy teeth! The then prevailing materials and methods simply weren’t good enough and that was very frustrating.”

“Via an American colleague I went to Dr. Clifford Ruddle, a global authority in the field of endodontology. That was a real eye-opener. From early morning till late in the evening he shared all his knowledge about root canals with us, a select group of international dentists. It was great!”

‘Expats love going to dentist Rik van Mill, whose employees not only speak Dutch and English but also Japanese, Hindi and Urdu’

In the past two decades Rik has paid regular visits to Dr. Ruddle in Santa Barbara. Initially, following courses and later also assisting him during training courses. “Those visits to Dr. Ruddle enable me to share the latest developments with my team and to implement these in our practice. We’re very happy and proud that we managed to build such a fantastic team around us; they’re all as passionate about dentistry as we are.”

Japanese community and expats

The international team at Dental Clinic H.J. van Mill consists of five dentists, six assistants, two dental hygienists and three receptionists. All dentistry disciplines are represented here: prevention and dental hygiene, pediatric dentistry, parodontology and endodontology, implantology, orthodontics, crowns, bridges and facings. Apart from Dutch and English, Japanese, Hindi and Urdu is spoken here. No wonder many expats and members of the big Japanese community in Amstelveen are a large part of the client base. The clinic’s website is available in Dutch, English and Japanese.

A wonderful experience

In the Netherlands, Rik occupies a prominent position in the field of endodontology. He trains aspiring dentists and fellow-dentists refer patients to him, especially in complex cases or when a molar needs to be treated again. “Such patients have gone through a lot, so when they come here they’re really afraid. But in the end it’s always far better than they expected. ‘It was a wonderful experience’, a relieved patient told me recently. It’s all a matter of perfect team work between the dentists and their assistants. A successful root canal treatment requires the right equipment – we work with Zeiss microscopes – and expert knowledge. But you could say that for every dental discipline.”

Healthy roots form a solid basis

Cosmetic dentistry is one of the special fields at Dental Clinic H.J. van Mill. Rik: “You should realize that an aesthetic treatment, for example applying facings, requires sacrificing part of the tooth. After all, you need space for the materials you’re going to put in. We always operate in a rather conservative manner and strive for a natural aesthetic and sustainable result. The trend nowadays is to put in an implant straightaway. This can be a pretty good solution but the patient’s own tooth or molar is still the best ‘implants’! In our clinic, we always start with the pillars: healthy roots. We use these as a basis to build something that will last a long time. You could compare it with a drilling platform: it would be nothing without a strong and solid foundation!”

Rik van Mill, van Tandartspraktijk van Mill in Amstelveen, is de absolute goeroe op het gebied van tandheelkunde. Alle specialisaties zijn aanwezig.

In April, interior design store Total4Living, located at Gelderlandplein, moved three doors to the left. Their new store is twice as big and boasts ten ambiance rooms where customers can have a look around, get a cup of coffee and find inspiration for their home.

We enter Total4Living through the beautiful façade made of black steel and glass. All four interior designers, Ilona, Britte, Kevin and Hiske, are busy showing customers around. And they don’t hesitate to let them touch the beautiful curtains, furniture and new wallpapers. Opulent fabrics like velvet are currently en vogue and the new wallpapers have wonderful textures.

More people find us now

“Ever since we moved, we’ve had a lot more people walking into our store,” Ilona says later on when it is a bit quieter. “We’re now at ground level so it’s easy for them to come in and have a look. Compared to the old store we’ve now got double the floor space and twice as many brands on display.”

Read the whole interview in our magazine; ZUIDAS. magazine is also in written in English and you can find a copy in every public area on the Zuidas.

Get your perfect pump on… the Zuidas

They’ll make your legs look longer and leaner, they’ll make you walk more upright and, according to Juliette de Vries, they’ll even change the way you speak: that’s what good…

They’ll make your legs look longer and leaner, they’ll make you walk more upright and, according to Juliette de Vries, they’ll even change the way you speak: that’s what good pumps can do to a woman. But we all know the troubles: pangs of pain in the ball of your foot, toes that feel crammed and feet that are totally numb after a night out… O, perfect pump, where were you all this time?

Juliette de Vries (61) already had an impressive career in hospitality behind her when she started shoe brand Feraggio – with just one pump shoe in the whole product range. We meet up at Brasserie Paardenburg in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, a stone’s throw away from her home and office. Expecting a woman click-clacking her way to us on high heels, we are very surprised when she comes walking in.

Feraggio is special

Juliette appears wearing a pair of white All Stars. White blouse, nice pair of jeans, razor-sharp look, gift of the gab. “Oh yeah, sneakers today. A good pump can empower a woman but that’s not always necessary. When I arrive somewhere, there’s a lot of woman entering the scene. And I hate heels that click-clack so loudly. Feraggio heels have a little rubber sole so you won’t hear them at all.” A silent heel, that’s just one of the many good points of the pump she launched well over a year ago.

Four years ago when Juliette said goodbye to her company Promotion Partners, an agency in flexible staffing and hostess services, she desperately needed a rest and more free time. She swore to never start her own company again.

Feraggio damespump

“Well, I was wrong,” she says drily. “The point is: whenever I start something, I’ll do it thoroughly and I like thinking big. Feraggio is not just a means for her to keep boredom at bay. It is a real company, backed by serious investment and with a large team working 24/7 to make it successful. The advantage of a ‘second tour of duty’ is that one doesn’t get too nervous when plan A fails. I love this pioneering phase but it will definitely be grandma’s last trick: I really underestimated the amount of work a business like this involves.”

Shoe designer Jan Jansen

Juliette spent many years searching for the perfect pair of pumps: elegant shoes with a nice heel she could walk on all day without feeling any pain. But she couldn’t find them. “So I thought: well, I’ll just have to make them myself then. A kind of Pippi Longstocking reflex: ‘I’ve never done this before, but I’m sure I’ll manage’. But I’m not a fashionista and I’d never been inside a factory, let alone that I knew anything about production or retail. I went to the best leather fair in Italy but I couldn’t even distinguish goatskin from pigskin leather. Only the word vitello rang a bell… because of vitello tonnato, haha!”

“I studied numerous designs to try to find the perfect shoe and then I had a lot of samples made. After a few weeks Jan Jansen, Holland’s most famous shoe designer, called and asked if perhaps I could use his expert opinion. That was magnificent because this man knows everything about shoes and their manufacturing techniques. Together we went through every tiny detail of my design. After two long years we were finally ready to present the perfect pump: the Feraggio!”

Why is Feraggio special?

The key question is: what makes the Feraggio pump, with its 365 euro price tag, so special? “Our pumps are fitted with a soft insole with memory foam. Pain in the foot is caused by pressure on the ball of the foot, blocking the blood circulation. The memory foam springs back into position and makes the blood flow again, allowing you to walk and stand much longer without any pain. There is only one model, in suede, in a timeless design and in two different heel heights: 3 and 4 inches.”

‘You’re sold once you realize how gorgeous and comfortable these shoes are’

“These shoes are always available and never go on sale. The heel has a non-slip surface and the tip of the outsole is fitted with a piece of iron. All these aspects together we call heelability. Anyone can wear these pumps and because of the clever design they are comfortable for all types of feet. Sizes range from EU size 35 to 42 (US: 4 to 9, UK: 3 to 8), including all half sizes.”

During the production and manufacturing process Juliette had to fight a lot of conventions. “I had certain things in mind and then people simply said: ‘That’s impossible. Welcome to the crazy world of shoes, but this is how we do it’. And then I replied: ‘Listen: my team was not trained in the shoe business, we’re going to do it differently!” And so we did.

Men like Feraggio

‘It’s extraordinary that 35% of the online orders are placed by men’

The name Feraggio was coined by Juliette’s former business partner, Patricia Schagen. “It doesn’t mean anything. We were looking for an international name that sounded nice and referred to luxury and Italian design. With Feraggio I focus on the international market, mainly the US – the market in affordable luxury is very big there and they have a real dresses-and-skirts culture. And the Middle East and England are very important as well, but these days we ship Feraggios to all corners of the world. It’s pretty extraordinary that 35% of the online orders are placed by men. They understand our product: this model was here 100 years ago and it will still be here in a 100 years’ time.”

“Most people usually start with a pair of black shoes and then buy other colours later. You’re sold once you realize how gorgeous and comfortable they are. Feraggio pumps easily combine with casual wear, a party dress or business attire. A pair of pumps in scarlet red or lemon yellow under a formal workplace outfit, that’s what makes life a bit more fun! The original idea was to start with only 4 colours. Well, that plan failed – our customers can now choose from 24 different colours.”

Feraggio shoe box

Not only the shoe but also the shoe box excels in usability and great design. It has a pull-out drawer and a window for a picture of its content. The boxes are big enough for men’s shoes and are fitted with a non-slip surface on the outside, enabling her customers to build a wonderful shoe cabinet. Because of the immense demand Juliette now also sells shoe boxes. Yes, that’s right: just the box, without any shoes in them – an idea that can only originate from the practical brain of a woman. A woman thinking out of the box.
